Gant Rugger

This past weekend one of my great friends introduced me to the clothing company Gant Rugger. They just came out with their promotional advertising campaign video for their Fall/Winter 2010 collection.

Gant Rugger Fall/Winter 2010 from Gant Rugger on Vimeo.

The video and the advertising campaign was shot by one of my favorite photographers, Guy Aroch and stars Jacques Naude, Reid Prebenda, and musician John Thornley. This past weekend I was in NYC at the PDN Photoplus expo and was able to hear some of my favorite photographers speak about their work and Guy Aroch was one of them. It was so amazing to be able to hear one of my favorite photographers speak and I think I was more star struck than if I had seen an actual movie star or celebrity. I think his images are so natural; his models never seem posed and his coloring and post production effects (like light leaks and softening) give his images a uniform feel that is specifically and identifiably his own. Here is one of the first posts I wrote about him - Click Here

The music in the video, by U.S. Royalty (you can download the song on their website by clicking the download link from this website), sets the mood so perfectly for a road trip and adds a perfect sense of nostalgia. In addition to being perfectly styled, the models bring their own unique sense of fun and personality to the way in which they wear and present the clothes, which is ultimately what the film is trying to promote. Gant Rugger has expertly marketed their brand by giving us a clear insight into how we should perceive their clothes, their images, and ultimately, their entire brand by evoking such a clear style and emotion through the media and clothes they put out.

90's Chic Redone

This shoot is beautiful and wistful and brings us to a specific time and place. Although it was photographed for the most recent issue of Harper's Baazar by John Balsom it looks like an editorial shot in the early-mid 90's mostly because of the styling and colors. The colors are a bit washed out and faded but is reminiscent of the coloring that was popular 15 or 20 years ago in the fashion industry rather than the hyper-saturated editorials that are seen today. Even though the shoot incorporates styles seen on the runway and in style for this season like shearling jackets (in the last image) and chunky knit sweaters the stylist, Katie Mossman, has put them together in a dated way. The styling is definitely referencing the styles of the 90's with the big oversized sweaters and jackets and the layering of them over big below-the-knee skirts. I like that the small details of this shoot bring us back and combine to give us a contemporary flashback of the old shoots.

Neo Romanticismo

It's great to see something a little different happening with studio shoots and mixing different concepts and colors (and b&w) into one cohesive shoot. His mixture of lights and natural lighting in his studio make his images soft and the light falls on the models in such a natural and refined way that simply adds to to the images and keeps them simple and understated.

365 Days of Fashion Photography

So I officially started this blog one year ago. I started it because I wasn't taking a photography class which is pretty much the only thing I wanted to be taking since I am a photo major and I wanted to get thinking about photography, film, and the visual arts. Its been so beneficial simply because I am always thinking about shoots and films and what I would say about them. It has forced me to form concise thoughts because I am in the mindset that I am writing for an audience regardless of if anyone actually reads this or not.

I don't really have much to say but I am posting a link to the site where you can view the first photo book that I recently made. If you are interested, you can buy it from the site or just share the link with your friends. All the images were taken with a Holga medium format camera during the summer of '09 when I was interning in NYC. The book is titled Interminable.

View the photo book here.

Here are a few images included in the book:
