GQ China

This shoot, photographed for GQ China by Nick Leary, is an example of why men should have their suits tailored. Tailored clothing makes such a difference and this shoot is just so sharp. I love the black and white and very muted colors. I can't wait to start shooting some mens editorials and will probably look back to this shoot as inspiration for styling, location, poses etc.

Hugh Vidler by Darren McDonald

I love this shoot, photographed by Darren McDonald for Helmet magazine, because it has such a great range of images. While all of the images were taken outside they have the more location type images (like the first image of the model on the car) but also the pictures against a dark background that looks like an outdoor studio setup (like the second and third images down). The locations change and make this shoot an interesting editorial story since the shots are so varied. I haven't shot many men's editorials recently but will be using this shoot as inspiration for a new story.

Collaboration with Cat D.

A few weeks ago this amazingly talented artist, Cat D. contacted me and asked to paint one of my pictures. I am sincerely flattered that she would choose one of my images to paint (of the stunning Sophie Reppert) since she usually draws her inspiration from images taken by some of the most amazing fashion photographers in the world. What I love about her work is her ability to capture light so incredibly well and translate it into a painting and in her own style. Here is the image she painted on the computer with pastels and also an awesome video that shows the layers of how she went about making her image. Please check out her website where she has an incredibly varied selection of paintings that she has made so far!

Light

Here are two shoots that I've come across recently that I love because of the lighting. On location I love to shoot with natural light in an indoor setting next to a window, exemplified in the first shoot by Matthew Brookes. In the second shoot, photographed by Peter Lindbergh, Scarlett's skin is absolutely radiant and glowing against the dark background. While the styles of the two shoots are completely different I love the soft quality of the light, which is what the images (at least for me) are all about.

Posing

A few of the people I have photographed in the past have asked me about posing so I just wanted to give some examples of great images that exemplify great posing. Modeling isn't about looking pretty standing in front of a camera, its about knowing your body and how it appears in relation to a lens. Here are some examples of images that are made so much better because of the posing and the body to convey something in the image, whether it is the pose in relation to the clothes, the tone, or the location. A good model is constantly changing up his/her poses during a shoot.

Head shots, close up images of just the face, are all different depending on what the model is trying to convey through her eyes, and lips, shoulders, and hands.
